Commercial Operations Challenges in Pharma and Biotech

Briefs

Survey results from 91 commercial operations, analytics, and data science leaders

Why commercial operations leaders are rethinking their data and AI partners

Commercial operations, analytics, and data science leaders are asked to turn fragmented commercial data into decisions at launch speed. The obstacle isn’t primarily budget. The barriers are: time to a clear answer, data that is not analytics-ready, and silos that duplicate work.

In a study commissioned by Trinity, Gatepoint Research surveyed 91 directors and vice presidents across pharma, biotech, medtech, diagnostics, and health technology between August 2025 and April 2026. They ranked their goals, named the barriers in their way, and described what they now require from a partner. Nearly a third are already evaluating a change in business intelligence or data management.

Use this advisory brief if you

  • Own commercial operations, commercial analytics, or data management for a pharma, biotech, or medtech portfolio
  • Need to shorten the path from raw commercial data to a decision your leadership will act on
  • Are weighing whether to move business intelligence, dashboarding, or data management to a new partner
  • Are building the ROI case for new analytics technology or AI use cases

About this advisory brief

This brief reports results from a Gatepoint Research survey of 91 leaders across four functions:

  • Commercial analytics and insights
  • Commercial operations and strategy
  • Data science and digital innovation
  • Data management and governance

All respondents are directors or vice presidents. Their organizations range from less than $250 million to more than $1.5 billion in annual revenue, and 95% work in either pharma or biotech.

Together, these results show where speed breaks down, which data problems persist, and how the bar for a commercial partner has moved. Leaders now expect therapeutic area depth and applied AI in the same relationship, not software alone.

What you will learn

  • Where speed breaks down, and why faster decisionsrank as the top goal across every function surveyed
  • Which data problems persist, including analytics-ready data, silos, and duplicated manual work
  • What leaders require from a partner, from therapeutic expertise to hands-on support beyond a technology license
  • Where AI is practical today, across business intelligence, data quality, forecasting, and customer engagement
  • Which functions are in play for a partner change, and which are locked into current contracts
  • How technology decisions get approved, and why ROI outweighs appetite for innovation
  • How Trinity supports these teams through analytics-ready commercial data, ForecastEDGE™, and InsightsEDGE™
