WALTHAM, Mass., March 13, 2026 – Trinity Life Sciences, a leader in global life sciences commercialization, today announced that Matt O’Hara, MBA, Partner in Trinity’s Evidence Strategy practice, has been appointed Chair of ISPOR’s newly formed Environmental Assessment in HEOR Special Interest Group (SIG) for a two-year term.

Healthcare innovation has traditionally been evaluated through clinical outcomes, patient quality of life, and economic value, but stakeholders are increasingly asking how the environmental impact of healthcare should shape the way value is defined and assessed. ISPOR’s Environmental Assessment in HEOR SIG is dedicated to exploring how climate resilience and environmental sustainability metrics can be incorporated into health economics and outcomes research and value assessment.

The SIG’s mission is to increase awareness, stimulate research, and develop holistic frameworks that expand the definition of healthcare value to include environmental impact. The group will work to identify gaps in current approaches, advance methodologies and data generation, and build community consensus on how environmental metrics – from carbon footprint to waste and water use – should be incorporated into value assessments.

This effort reflects a growing paradox in healthcare: while health technologies improve and extend lives, the life sciences industry is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing this tension requires new thinking about how health systems, regulators, and industry evaluate innovation and make trade-offs between patient outcomes, system sustainability, and environmental impact.

The SIG will work toward integrating environmental considerations into the broader concept of “whole health,” ensuring that environmental sustainability becomes part of the conversation when assessing health technologies and care pathways. As healthcare systems around the world pursue net-zero goals and more sustainable models of care, the ability to measure and evaluate environmental impacts alongside patient outcomes will become increasingly important.

“At Trinity, we see environmental assessment as an important evolution in HEOR and a natural extension of the progress made in areas such as real-world evidence and health equity over the past decade,” said Matt O’Hara, MBA, Partner, Evidence Strategy, Trinity Life Sciences. “By advancing frameworks and data standards for environmental impact, we can help decision-makers more fully understand the trade-offs and opportunities associated with health technologies and care pathways.”

Environmental assessment may represent the next frontier in healthcare value frameworks, much as real-world evidence and health equity reshaped HEOR in recent years. The SIG aims to support HEOR practitioners, clinicians, decision makers, and patients by creating practical pathways to incorporate climate resilience and environmental sustainability into value assessment and “whole health” decision making.

This work also reflects Trinity’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility. Trinity has established Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)–approved goals, achieved LEED certification in select offices, and continues to examine where the firm can serve as an effective environmental partner – both in its operations and in the work it does with clients across the life sciences ecosystem.

“We are excited to support this important effort through Matt’s leadership and through Trinity’s continued commitment to advancing research, dialogue, and innovation at the intersection of health outcomes, healthcare value, and environmental sustainability,” said Tiffany Apczynski, ESG Director, Trinity.  “We congratulate Matt and the broader ISPOR community on launching this Special Interest Group and advancing this vital conversation for the future of sustainable healthcare.”
